Netflix’s Day Shift Review

Day Shift is a new Netflix action-comedy flick that was released August 12, on the streaming service. The movie consists of some big-name actors such as the main character, Jamie Foxx, who’s family thinks he does a pool cleaning gig as his job, when in fact he is actually a vampire hunter. Foxx, who goes by Bud in the movie, ex-wife happens to be none other than the beautiful Meagan Good, and she still looks good on screen as always. Snoop Dogg is another big name in the film, even though the iconic rapper is not known for his acting roles. His cameos in certain movies like Scary Movie 5, Soul Plane, and several others have actually been pretty good. Furthermore, he must have a good relationship with the Franco brothers, considering he acted alongside James Franco in Future World in 2018, and now Day Shift with James’ brother, Dave Franco.

A few other familiar faces made this movie a decent watch, like Steve Howey from the popular TV-series Shameless, who also happens to be a legendary vampire slayer. Apart from the familiar actors in the movie, there is not too much else to celebrate about this film. The tone of movie is more comedic than anything else as most of the characters seem to be putting a little too much effort into being funny with most of their lines, but rather turning out a bit cringy.

The action scenes which is somewhat interesting, gives off the vibes of the TV-series The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window. Day Shift action scenes seems to be making fun of vampire or zombies horror films, and this is evident early in the first few scenes. It is difficult to successfully execute a comedic-action vampires or zombies’ flick, considering most of the success of that these horror films has, is when the tone is more serious than when it’s humorous. Zombieland however, is one of the few films that got it right. Perhaps due to the cast of Zombieland being already known for their comedic roles, it was evident what to expect, and the movie was awesome.

If you have time on your hands, you can definitely give Day Shift a watch. However, I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to see it. It’s a solid 4 out of 10 rating on the Mah’s scale in which movies are ranked from 0 being the worst, to 10+ being the absolute best.
